Re: “Richard III

My very first introduction to Shakespeare (and Olivier) when I was 11 years old and my parents took me to see it. And never forgotten! It is drama on the highest level and Olivier's Richard combines everything in one person and is so magnetic that it is only too easy to understand why everything gives way before him (including Lady Anne). It is horrifying, gruesome, and perfectly controlled with a blackhearted, sexy, and majestic scoundrel you simply must like. Lady Anne is beautiful and touching and Buckingham the best 'realpolitiker' I've ever seen on any stage. The only thing I hate is seeing Richard slaughtered in the final scene although it adds to the intensity. People who have no knowledge of Shakespeare should see this at the very last!!
As to the review above and on a slightly pedantic note: Claire Bloom does NOT play Elizabeth but Lady Anne!
