Re: “List-o-Mania

It is a fascinating list, and it's filled with a plethora of titles that are excruciatingly underrated (Johnny Guitar, Make Way for Tomorrow, etc) as well as titles that don't immediately jump to mind, but the more that I think, the less absurd they become, and just on that basis alone it's a very good list, because it fulfills my sole criterion above and beyond the call of duty: it is interesting. A good list shouldn't just recycle the same time-honored industry canon we see thrown around all the time; including obscure titles, underrated titles, little-seen titles, and titles preferred for sentimental reasons makes the list not only far more bearable but opens the notoriously closed industry just a little bit and broadens the cinematic horizons of everyone who reads the list with an open mind. Lists like these are the lists that are the impetus for those periodic critical reevaluations of filmmakers previously not that highly appraised. Hitchcock's breakout (outside of France, of course) was with Robin Wood's championing, perhaps we need Rosenbaum to get Howard Hawks the attention he deserves (Scarface, Rio Bravo, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, etc). Besides, any list of the best American films that includes the Magnificent Ambersons is a slap in the face to the kind of people whose mouths water at the mere mention of Michael Bay.
