Re: “Venus's Next Wave

moxie109, the most galling part of this article is Beardsley's direct quotation in which she calls feminism irrelevant to her version of Venus Zine. She perpetuates the perplexing pop cultural mystification around the word feminist by refusing to even voice the word. What is she so scared of? Why not tease out the complex facets of feminism in regard to art/music production over time and space, giving the artists you cover a chance to voice their varied opinions about it like the Venus of yore did, and Bust does? The acknowledgment that women musicians do not have as much of a platform as men musicians do contradicts the assertion that feminism is not relevant to the Venus Zine discourse. A contribution to feminist discourse will be there even if you decide to muzzle it or rename it. Sorry to say that this disavowal coupled with an agenda to get a broader market base has got me skeptical. Of course I understand that print media must change with the times and broaden horizons to survive in this rough economy - but alienating the core readership of a publication that I was proud to identify with my hometown seems like a dicey first step to say the least.
