Re: “Butchy in the Back

Editor - Christopher Schreck is in Icy Demons and playing in Aleks' new band. Chris Powell is no longer playing with Icy Demons and does not play in Aleks Eva.

Re: “Colorblind Soul

Ughhhhhhh. The comments section of Brooklyn Vegan do not represent a reality that justifies this long of an article. I wish to apologize to Sharon Jones & her excellent band on behalf of the city of Chicago for this piece. Way to make their job less fun, exciting and rewarding. Way to make music itself less exciting.

More young, white people go to Sharon Jones' concerts because her band is signed to an indie label. Her audience wasn't able to see the artists by whom the Dap Kings are influenced first hand, so they go see a band nearly as good. If a percentage of the audience is there because Jones is black (and really, how big could that percentage actually be??), that is no fault of Jones or her band.

Re: “That Band You Don't Understand

Wish the Reader would pick up McPheeters' work more frequently. It's wide-ranging and unique.

Re: “Appropriation, Vacation

re: ZoeBourke's comment:

Nowhere does Ms. Hopper say "indie music is meant to be made by poor, lower class..."; she is pointing out the stereotype of how we think of musicians. She became a journalist by writing well and from the heart, and by commenting on things that other writers are afraid of (see her article from the 90's "Where The Boys Aren't"). I often disagree with her views, but your problems with her article do not make her a poor writer. Finally, I find it ironic that you accuse her of being airy, inept, tactless and "fowl", and then wonder how she can be so negative.

Re: “Appropriation, Vacation

People wouldn't get so worked up about Vampire Weekend's background, cultural tourism or head-smacking lyrics if we couldn't FEEL the insincerity in their music. These are not people that need to play music, they are people that have the ability to do so, and that's something that is obvious without critical dissection. Good piece, though.

Re: “Held Back by the Old School

It seems that there's a lot of great music being made in Chicago & that we'd all be a lot better off if you used your privilege as lead Reader music critic to write about it rather than a long-form review of an album you find "unpalatable".
