Re: “El Tapatio

Not that good. Rather insipid Mexican fare. Tacos, burritos, and some more platter-like options. But nothing seemed to stand out. It all had that sort of cheese-and-refried-beans-with-plain-lettuce feel.

Re: “Rise

Some of the sushi selections were interesting. I liked their ideas in terms of the special chef's rolls they offer. In particular, I thought the Mexican was nice. But the sushi somehow falied to achieve solid results. The fish quality was decent (as I would expect considering the price), but the chefs didn't succeed in combining the ingredients well and the fish should have been colder. I am no sushi chef myself but I understand that it is an art. Rise could use better artists.

They did have a really nice clam-miso soup that was tasty but seemed more like a Thai soup than Japanese.

Lastly, the service did suffer. The waitstaff seemed intent on creating some aura of hipness in the place. If they want to do that, fine. Just make sure you take care of your customers.

Re: “Pequod's

First, we tried the thin crust a couple weeks ago and were not impressed one bit. Then we were told by friends that we had to try their delicious pan. No dice. Flavorless, aside from the burnt-crust ends which were interesting but didn't make up for an overall failing pizza. The sauce was flat in that it had no zest or kick to it. The cheese was boring. The crust was neither buttery or tasteful.

There are much better pizza places in the city.

Re: “Coobah

The breakfast burrito was delicious, and they have some wonderful and unique sauces on the side (there was some Philippino sauce that was particularly interesting). But there were 2 problems that made the experience unpleasant. First, we waited close to an hour for our food. And there was nothing complex about our meals to merit such a wait (especially when it wasn't terribly busy). Second, the black beans were undercooked which made my companion's food particularly bad.

The food here is really good as long as they make sure that ingredients are ready to go. My guess is that they ran out of black beans or something and had to make more in a short period of time. Thus the wait, and the bad beans. I hope that next timethey can get that right or at least accomodate us in some other way (maybe suggest another dish?) so that we can enjoy the wonderful menu.

Oh, and service could have been much, much better.

I wanted simple Italian and thought we should try Buca. Bad mistake. The food was sub-standard. Sure, the portions are enormous but that doesn't mean much when it isn't good. The giant meatballs had no flavor whatsoever (I actualy found them rather gross) and the spaghetti seemed overcooked. The sauce was not that far off from cafeteria food. My companion's canneloni was mediocre at best.

There are plenty of Italian options in the city. Won't ever return here.
