If Studs Terkel had studied playwriting with Paula Vogel, he might have come up with something like Adam Bock's beguiling one-act about a trio of quirky professionals who love the process of working but are troubled by the consequences. A typographer, a geographer, and a stenographer--or "court reporter," as he prefers--sit at a table and ruminate on how their jobs affect everyone else in the world. ("An unethical typographer can make lies look like the truth.") Both Bock's play and Matt Schwader's staging for Fifth Floor Productions stumble when the trio move closer to their personal relationships. But given how seldom occupations are discussed in American plays, just seeing one featuring people who are intelligent and fervent about what they do all day feels satisfying. --Kerry Reid
