Appropriately, it's the Asian moms who steal this show, a collection of short plays from A-Squared Theatre Workshop. Ginger Leopoldo is especially good as a matriarch who catches her son up on the plot of her favorite Filipino soap opera in "This Is Why I Don't Drink," and Lovien "Joey" Flores defeats would-be criminals with a single disapproving glance in "MamaSiHero." Disapproval is a major theme, in fact—but most of the pieces strike a balance between the poignant and the playful. "I'm going to disappoint my mother again," says a daughter portrayed by Mia Park as she tries to prepare the title food in "Eight Turkey Sandwiches." Yet she loves the life she's created for herself and ends up telling her (absent) Asian mother: "I can't sacrifice myself for you the way you and Grandma did for me." What she can do, though, is stand on her head. And for the last minute of "Eight Turkey Sandwiches," she does. —Julia Thiel
