Annie Baker set out to write "a play about issues that wasn't an 'issue play,'" and this compelling dramedy is proof that she succeeded. When Phyllis and her partner, Joyce, play host to a photographer known for his nude portraits, they're confronted with loads of issues, from misogyny and the exploitative side of art to the lack of empathy demonstrated by Joyce's socially stunted adult son, Jared. These challenges play second fiddle, though, to the quirks and foibles of Baker's well-developed characters. As Jared, Eric Burgher deftly transitions from deadpan proclamations on autodidacticism (his textbook being the Oxford English Dictionary) to heart-wrenching confusion about his sexuality. Benjamin Thiem's production inspires both hearty laughter and serious reflection. --Marissa Oberlander
