The Aldermen Project: 50 Aldermen/50 Artists All Ages Closing (Theater and Galleries) Free Recommended

When: March 19-April 2 2010
In case we needed proof that nothing is too mundane to inspire great art, curators Jeremy Scheuch and Lauri Apple got 50 artists to immortalize an alderman apiece for "The Aldermen Project: 50 Aldermen/50 Artists." Some of the subjects were game enough to sit for their portraits--but two had the bad manners to leave office. The posts vacated by Manny Flores (resigned to head the Illinois Commerce Commission) and Ike Carothers (a little matter of bribe taking) will be represented symbolically. Maybe the replacements, whose appointments were announced Monday by Mayor Daley, can come by with a snapshot. The subjects are all invited for the opening, and other events are being planned, including an appearance Saturday, March 20, by 32nd Ward alderman Scott Waguespack and a screening next Saturday, March 27, of a film on the late, legendary 25th Ward alderman Vito Marzullo. Apple is an assistant editor at the Reader, which is a sponsor of the show. There's also a quiz to find out how well you know your aldermen (those who attempt it will be eligible for a drawing to win a Four Star commuter bike).
