Strangeloop Theatre took a risk in reviving this 1977 memory play by Brian Friel. Based on Euripides's Hippolytus, it's the type of richly layered, emotional work that would be painful to see staged anything less than brilliantly. But brilliance is exactly what they achieve in portraying an Irish family torn apart by an incestuous affair. Friel's plot only vaguely follows Euripides's, yet moves with a stark Greek inevitability that suggests the horror of an exit wound blooming in slow-mo on grainy video. Director Thomas Murray and his expert cast exert admirable restraint, and Jillian Rafa's perfect lilt makes her especially captivating as the impassive narrator. --Keith Griffith
