Cloud Gate artistic director Lin Hwai-min conjures multiple dreamscapes in his glassy, glacial Moon Water, an hour-long 1998 piece receiving its Chicago premiere this weekend. When the company last came to town, in 2006, Lin showed a harder edge with Wild Cursive, his nuanced exploration of Chinese calligraphy; he takes a more flowing, transformative approach to black-and-white imagery in Moon Water, whose movement grows out of tai chi and whose scenic design includes wavy, reflective surfaces. Selections from Bach's Six Suites for Solo Cello are as lushly sustained as the dancing, and the meditative pace invites both inner reflection and close attention to the dancers' controlled yet apparently effortless motions, their pliant torsos and fluidly articulated hands and feet. Ignoring the conventions of human interaction, each dancer slides along his or her own path, gaze turned inward, and an otherworldly harmony is created through seemingly random conjunctions of bodies in time and space. --Laura Molzahn
