When: Fri., April 4, 10 p.m. 2014
Indie multi-instrumentalist Shawn Rosenblatt calls Chicago home, but he’s been touring for close to four years, rarely keeping an apartment here for long—and the psych-pop he makes as Netherfriends doesn’t sound like it’s from anywhere at all. It’s as if Rosenblatt summons his dreamlike, out-of-focus tunes from a dimension where sunbeams come in every color of the rainbow and anthropomorphic trees dance the days away. Last year on the Fourth of July, he wrapped up his 50 Songs 50 States project by releasing all the songs via an interactive online map (later he put them out on a single cassette), and on March 3 he self-released P3ACE (pronounced “three peace”), his first album of straight-up Netherfriends material since then. Its catchy lava-lamp jams get their shape and energy from boom-bap beats, so that much of P3ACE bangs like the instrumental side of a hip-hop single—Rosenblatt frequently collaborates with local MCs, and last year he released a mixtape with some of them called New CHI-t. Shimmering guitars provide the album with a sunny, uplifting sparkle, and on the killer “Joey Vision” they make Rosenblatt’s angsty lyrics about his career troubles sound hopeful and even triumphant. Tonight’s show is a cassette-release party for P3ACE. —Leor Galil Divino Niño and Speaking Suns open.
