Edgy, energetic Annoyance Theatre is the right place for this darkly charming musical based on Roger Corman's extremely low budget 1959 black comedy about a struggling artist who discovers a horrifying technique for creating lifelike statues. Director Ray Mees and songsmith Chuck Malone haven't smoothed out the film's many rough edges (the original was reportedly shot in only five days), as Howard Ashman and Alan Menken did when they tackled Corman's 1960 follow-up to A Bucket of Blood, The Little Shop of Horrors. Instead, Mees's uneven ensemble bristles with Annoyance-style comic eccentricity, led by James Stanton as homicidal nebbish Walter Paisley. --Jack Helbig
