Want to return to the 1950s? Me neither. This jukebox musical--about a girl group, performing first at their 1958 high school prom and then at the ten-year reunion--all too clearly recalls the period's lockstep view of women, with its insistence on niceness and L-O-V-E. Things open up a bit with the leap to the reunion, but even that's skewed toward the simpiest songs of the early 60s, and the playlist closes with the incredibly polite "Sincerely," covered in the mid-50s by the McGuire Sisters. The characters and stories are predictable, and creator-director Roger Bean repeats the same jokes and physical shtick ad nauseam. But the close harmonies of the four well-trained and vigorous singer-actors almost made me nostalgic for the enforced bonhomie of the Eisenhower era. Almost. --Laura Molzahn
