Torture is the day job of the military interrogator at the center of Maria Irene Fornes's disturbing 1985 drama--and at night he comes home and tortures some more, beating and raping the young woman he keeps locked in the basement. His wife is in denial, his good-hearted maid is disgusted but powerless. Fornes's willfully opaque script keeps the meaning of all the unpleasantness unclear (violence begets violence?). But given the sense of menace generated by director Marti Lyons in this Tooth and Nail Ensemble/Two Lights Theatre Company joint effort--from Ruthie Neumeier's dim, spooky lighting design to Kevin V. Smith's chilling performance as the interrogator--it almost doesn't matter. --Zac Thompson
