Martin Sherman's 1979 drama, about the persecution of homosexuals in Nazi Germany, receives an earnest but unsatisfying revival from Hubris Productions. Director Jacob Christopher Green's attempt to honor gay Holocaust victims is admirable, but his slackly-paced staging rarely conveys the physical and psychological tension in Sherman's harrowing tale of a shallow, self-loathing "queer" who discovers his inner strength and capacity for love after being consigned to Dachau. Many of the play's most intimate and important moments are lost simply because the young actors mumble their dialogue, and Green's decision to add a sentimental fantasy sequence in act two reveals an imperfect understanding of Sherman's stark, Beckett-influenced text. --Albert Williams
