Re: “Requiem for a Running Back

A heartfelt and moving description of living with the men of the gridiron who suffer from CTE. I was moved to tears as MR. Lewis was my husband's coach. Their story was my story. This film will educate and pull at your heart. Well done Rebecca Carpenter

Re: “Masturbation epidemic in Cook County court lockups raises questions about jail conditions, county budget, defendants' rights

People who feel they have nothing to lose usually act out and this environment only exacerbates that feeling especially when you have a bond you can't meet then a record on your back you can't beat so what have you got to lose so you take it out on the P.D (usually white or female or both) whom you think really doesn't give a damn about you so why not vent your frustration in the most disgusting manner you can think of lord knows they can only give you more time which you have plenty already but seriously since this is a monetary issue how about the public servants ( the ones who are highly paid and you know who we're talking about)taking pay cuts and cutting out some of the unnecessary bureaucracy that we know Crook County is famous for.

Re: “Requiem for a Running Back

Looking forward to seeing this film for the second time! Rebecca gives the viewer a clear account of what it was like growing up with a father she adored and yet in return a father who couldn't give of himself 100% due to an undiagnosed brain trauma which we now know is CTE. The film answers so many questions that the viewer may wonder about with loved ones who have played the game and now experiencing similar trauma. So well done. A must see!

Re: “Joe Ricketts, DNAinfo, and the fearsomeness of labor

Interesting. There are plenty of billionaires on the opposite side of the political spectrum from Joe Ricketts. Why don't they belly up to the bar and cover the tab for DNAinfo? Someones like Michael Bloomberg, Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, etc. Because they share a common principle with Joe: some kind of acceptable return on their investment. Now that "return" may not be in dollars and cents. Clearly it wasn't for Joe in the years he was taking a bath. But just the demonstrable achievement of stated goals that permits them to see their investment as a "going concern." You see, these people think strategically. They care little for the here and now of journalists but passionately for the future of three, five, ten, twenty years out. The DNAinfo present/future scales, so to speak, were balanced until unionization tipped the scales. Fearsomeness? Give me a break - and tell Sally Field to shove it. Oh, another common trait of Joe, Michael, Bill, Warren: they run the numbers. Did Michael Miner? Did Ryan Smith? Or are they trapped in a cage of mere words - braining themselves on the bars?

Re: “Joe Ricketts, DNAinfo, and the fearsomeness of labor

" No doubt unions complicate the workplace, but the us-against-them dynamic I've observed during media contract talks (recently concluded at the Reader, by the way) don't destroy esprit de corps so much as invigorate it."

I have a very difficult time believing that the extreme us vs. them rhetoric during media contract talks is just set aside afterwards and that everyone all of the sudden has an "all in this together" attitude. This isn't true with other unionized industries. It's especially obvious that the massive conflicts between employees and the goals of the organization as a whole continue well after contract negotiations in the government context. At CPS, for example, the union head routinely calls the leaders of the district very nasty names and bad-mouths (not to mention, organizes protests against) virtually every decision they make to move the school system forward. That's not good for the organization as a whole and the people it is supposed to serve. The police union also routinely makes efforts to impede progress for the mission of the organization as a whole when this might come with some uncertainty to individual officers. I don't buy the idea that the presence of a union doesn't often severely impair the success of the employer and thus everyone's success in the long run. In the private sector, for example, we know that most of the airlines and domestic car companies went bankrupt at some point over the past couple decades in part because of union restrictions. And those were established companies. A union cannot ever be a good idea at a new unprofitable company when it has an unproven business model in an unpredictable industry. The union leaders in New York who tried to organize DNAInfo should have known that this was extremely unrealistic. They hoped Ricketts would be willing to lose money forever and just give up the idea of it being any type of viable business. I guess they thought he might be willing to use the website for some other type of purpose, such as what Rupert Murdoch apparently does with the long-time money loser New York Post. But that would have meant that Ricketts was interested in spreading his political views with the website and there is no evidence that was the case. So ironically, the union lost out in part because Ricketts wasn't going to lose money on a media property in order to be propagandist for his conservative (which include, anti-union) viewpoints.

"francj, labor would love to operate its own version of DNAInfo, but capital is controlled by people like Ricketts."

I don't know what exactly you mean by "people like Ricketts", Shorty. Ricketts founded DNAInfo, which everyone here acknowledges was a high quality news organization, and funded it for eight years and was willing to lose money for that long. That strikes me as a positive thing. What does "people like Ricketts" mean in that context? It's really unfortunate that so many people seem to subscribe to the notion that Ricketts somehow has some obligation to keep losing money forever just because people enjoyed his product. Bill de Blasio has made some inexcusable comments on that score that rivals some of the inappropriate things that Donald Trump likes to say.

Unions have more than enough capital, they just choose to spend it on politics.

Nothing is stopping Labor from operating their own version of DNAInfo. But I won't hold my breath.

Re: “Joe Ricketts, DNAinfo, and the fearsomeness of labor

A few years ago, Alisa Hauser invited me to be part of a DNAinfo event at Sox Park. Readers were encouraged to by tickets through DNA, which would get them a seat, some food, and a portrait sketch done by me at the park. Alisa told me that her editors encouraged all reporters to have these paid reader meetup events as they were one of the few ways the site could raise cash. Banner ads and such didn't seem to be a dependable revenue source so instead this fledgeling news organization had to help ends meet with PTA bakesale type approach. Otherwise, their continued existence depended entirely on the whims of a far-right billionaire who could pull the plug on a whim or when he decided that this charity donation/tax write-off became more trouble than it was worth. It's a wonder it lasted as long as it did.

I was sorry to hear that he finally did it but not surprised in the least. I enjoyed reading DNA, especially for their neighborhood coverage. It truly felt local, down to recognizing reporters working on stories at the coffeeshop I go to nearly every day. We need something like DNA but have to come up with some better scheme than being at the mercy of billionaires or subjecting readers to invasive and irritating advertising. I, for one, would gladly pay for a functional local news site the way I do each month for the New York Times. One way or another, someone has to pay reporters to gather stories about our city. Why shouldn't readers?

Re: “Joe Ricketts, DNAinfo, and the fearsomeness of labor

In a workplace where owners and staff are truly in it together, collaborating and cooperating, a union isnt necessary. But when the staff feels exploited and vulnerable, they turn to unionization. If owners like Ricketts are really interested in esprit de corps and everyone succeeding, theyll do everything they can to make a better workplace instead of just watching the bottom line.
