Re: “42 Grams and the weight of culinary greatness

There seems to be a lot more to this story than the documentary, or news about 42 Grams, has reported. After watching, I was curious, and started reading more. Alexa's twitter bio pretty clearly labels herself as a domestic abuse survivor, and while I'm in no way trying to perpetuate rumors, the doc didn't seem to suggest that type of statement relates to a prior relationship.

The doc not-so-vaguely hinted at some very deep strains on the relationship, and in this day and age when the #metoo light is being shined on the restaurant industry, it would be nice to know if there's more to the story here.

Re: “Statement from Sun-Times Media CEO on change in Chicago Reader leadership

The Reader has been at a crossroads since they went down the sad path in the early 2000s of pretending the self-reported boring, drunken antics of twenty-somethings fresh from the suburbs was a form of journalism.

There's still hope for the Reader to regain its soul after this move.

Funny how Da Konk thought that this cover was going to go viral and it didn't make the national news even after his firing.

Re: “Black Panther

Judging by some of the comments the "identity politics" mentioned by the reviewer has a tendency to pull in a few people who want to see that and complain about it, aka i knew it! Which means they miss the rest of what this movie has to offer, which is a lot. They are the blind man describing an elephant by only seeing one small aspect. Surprise, Black Panther has a backstory and he's black so it involved...being black. In fact I'd guess his story in Wakanda isn't really the the issue, neither is it that the antagonist grew up in Oakland, since that was pretty tame. What they really object to is that the antagonist references oppressors and using the tools of Wakanda to turn it all upside-down. Interestingly they never reference white, but it's implied, because, well, history and stuff. Apparently for some moviegoers the writers should've ignored the entire topic of being black and just make it another superhero who, coincidentally was black but all else was the same, blah blah, fight scene fight scene, win. Maybe they could've had him fight the Russians or someone from the Middle East, or Nazis. But how much more compelling and plausible to have this story instead. It's not even heavy-handed, so it strikes me that if this movie makes you uncomfortable, you should just stick to Pollyanna and Disney G-rated movies. Your loss, as you'll miss the visually-stunning, creative, technological and fun aspects this movie has to offer, as well as, oh no! A message of helping one another, rather than watching from a safe distance because you're in a comfortable place. Bottom line: Movie 5 stars. Reviewer 3. Some posters above, maybe just a blanky.

Thanks for letting me know who actually owns the Sun Times and Reader. I'll remember that when I don't pick up a copy next time to avoid the slime dripping from it.

@John Greenfield
"This is a great day for Chicago journalism."
Well, it's certainly a great day for you to brown-nose. Plus you're already toting up 71 "likes." So many relatives. So many fellow bikers. Wait a minute: is Richard Roeper handling that angle for you? Naughty, naughty! Poor lonely me has only 4 "likes." Console myself that I've always been an acquired taste. Like truffles. For the elite rather than the hoi polloi.

Re: “Statement from Sun-Times Media CEO on change in Chicago Reader leadership

"Capital Fax is saying that Konkol actually spiked a couple of Joravsky columns. That suggests that my theory is correct that he was trying to get back to the point where the arguments made in the publication were based somewhat in reality and not just angry rants."

I see. You have theories, not conspiracy theories. If only I had thought of that. IAC, you want a Reader that's Fair and Balanced, right?

Why would Konkol spike a Joravsky column? One establishment, one wannabe Royko.

Re: “Statement from Sun-Times Media CEO on change in Chicago Reader leadership

@IAC. Alison True oversaw the Reader's shift to an opinion-driven journal. I remember her old Reader was great, with a lot of diverse content and voices, but then sometime around the paper's color redesign in the early 2000s, the Reader grew flat and predictable in its political focus -- it was more interested in topics than in characters, and as a result it was a lot less entertaining. Maybe some of that had to do with the failing business, but True seemed to be trying to "update" the Reader, and the result was embarrassingly like MSM. The Reader abandoned narrative feature writing, which was a strong suit, and it stopped telling oddball stories. The Reader used to have a lot of humor in it. I can't remember the last time the Reader made me laugh . . . 1999?

Whoever takes over now should try to resurrect the old Reader's sense of joy about Chicago. Konkol appeared to want the Reader to "weigh in" on the news of the day, and it took little imagination to dedicate an issue to J.B. Pritzker or to print a cover with a stock image. The next Reader editor should try to surprise and enlighten us rather than to simply provoke.

Re: “Black Panther

Well said. I always love when the virtue signalling trash out themselves so I can point and laugh at them telling me how oppressed I am.

I'm glad at least you were intellectually honest enough to use the word "identity politics" openly and freely.

Re: “Clint Eastwood finds his inner Eric Rohmer with The 15:17 to Paris.

Ben, I know your job must be difficult watching movies all day (and getting paid to do it), but surely it must be obvious that you have to actually see the movie first before you write about it. If you had watched it, Id hope that youd be honest enough with your readers to tell them to skip this one (for anything else, really)...

As it was utterly abysmal.
