E.L. James's latex-bustier-ripper Fifty Shades Grey came out in book form in 2011; the movie version opens in a few weeks. Nicely positioned in between is this stage send-up featuring a script and 11 songs by numerous hands. The tale of how mousy Ana Steele discovers her hard and soft BDSM limits unfolds as three unfulfilled hausfrauen read the novel to spice up their lives. The jokes are appropriately vulgar ("There is a hole inside of me," warbles Ana) and not entirely stupid when it comes to satirizing James's submission-as-liberation ethos ("I care for you so much I want to beat the living crap out of you," coos wealthy perv Christian Grey). The performances are amusing too. But there's nothing in this cheap-looking, two-act, non-Equity touring production that couldn't be covered at least as satisfyingly in a ten-minute sketch by a decent Chicago comedy troupe. —Tony Adler
