There are no characters as such in Sarah Kane's 1999 performance text, but there is an unnamed someone who speaks--and she's not happy. In fact, she's clinically depressed. Full of self-loathing and defiantly unresponsive to the raft of therapies, therapists, and (duly listed) drugs that have been tried out on her, she's ready to kill herself. Beau O'Reilly has deployed the "bewildered fragments" of her discourse among five actors who perform them now as vaudeville, now as dance or monologues or scenes. And despite an ill-considered attempt at audience participation, he does a pretty strong job of realizing those fragments onstage. But there's one problem that neither he nor anybody else can overcome, which is the fact that Kane actually did kill herself after finishing 4:48 Psychosis. The piece is her suicide note. That being the case, any performance of it is inherently voyeuristic, grotesque, ugly. --Tony Adler
