Long after Tauheed "2 Chainz" Epps exhausts his current moment in the pop-rap spotlight, his story will surely live on as an example of the power of a name—it should be taught in marketing courses everywhere. As "Tity Boi" (what he called himself till early last year, both as half of the duo Playaz Circle and as a solo artist), Epps was for the longest time a hip-hop underdog, the kind that heads would hold up as an example of an underground artist who deserved marquee recognition. Then he became 2 Chainz, got cameos on a ton of big songs (the biggest being Kanye West's "Mercy"), and suddenly became exactly as much of a star as we'd always hoped he would. His recent Based on a T.R.U. Story (Def Jam) is a slick but hilariously enjoyable album featuring guest turns by Kanye, The-Dream, Nicki Minaj, and a few other hip-hop A-listers, with top-notch production and approximately as many puns as you'd expect from Epps at this point. Be sure to check out the extended version, which includes "Like Me," whose Million Dollar Mano beat is based on a very nice Weeknd sample. —Miles Raymer
