Richard Donner (Lethal Weapon) serves up an old-school action picture--no frantic montage, no digital set pieces, no trick ending, just a troubled hero and a ticking clock. A weary, alcoholic cop (Bruce Willis) agrees to deliver a witness (Mos Def) a mile and a half across Manhattan for a grand jury hearing, a routine errand that turns into a life-and-death struggle when dirty cops led by Willis's former partner (David Morse) try to kill the kid before he can testify against them. Def and Willis are both good, but Donner's lethal weapon here is Morse, a chronically overlooked character actor whose combined tenderness and ruthlessness make him the most fascinating heavy since Robert Ryan. PG-13, 105 min. Century 12 and CineArts 6, Chatham 14, City North 14, Crown Village 18, Ford City, Gardens 1-6, Gardens 7-13, Lawndale, Lincoln Village, Norridge, North Riverside, River East 21, 62nd & Western.
