10,000 Maniacs

When: Sat., Feb. 14, 5:30 & 8 p.m. 2015
Price: sold out
The band known for launching Natalie Merchant’s career in the 20th century has brought its own work into the 21st. A new album, Twice Told Tales, is slated for spring, but unlike 10,000 Maniacs’ last effort, 2013’s Music From the Motion Picture, the forthcoming project features no new material. Instead it’s a collection of traditional folk songs from the British Isles, reimagined and recorded with crowd-funded support. The band, rejoined by songwriter/guitarist/founding member John Lombardo for the first time in more than a decade, has already surpassed its PledgeMusic goal, and 10 percent of all funds raised will ultimately be put toward a music scholarship program for students in the group’s birthplace of Jamestown, New York. Before the record comes out, the current incarnation of 10,000 Maniacs will take the stage at City Winery, a suitably intimate venue for a tenured rock band trying its hand at pure folk. —Sasha Geffen 10,000 Maniacs also perform at the Beverly Arts Center on Fri 2/13.
