Fulton Market nightclub the Mid will close for good in February 2019. Nightlife entrepreneurs Lucas King and Nick Karounos opened the club in 2010, and according to a press release, they're closing it due to the rapid development in the neighborhood. I imagine there are other complications, though: the Mid opened during the boom of EDM, and catered to its exploding fan base as it rocketed to dominance in the dance-music world. EDM poster boy Skrillex played his first Chicago show at the Mid.

EDM hasn't exactly gone bust, but for the past few years it's been clear the boom is over—especially since super-promoter SFX declared bankruptcy in February 2016. The Mid has done a great job showcasing the breadth of dance music, and I was always happy to see it book big-name locals such as Derrick Carter, Kaskade, Green Velvet, and the Hot Mix 5. But it wasn't the only nightlife spot in town, and when Concord Music Hall opened in Logan Square in 2013, it drew on the same talent pool and often the same audiences as the Mid. (King and Karounos are both part owners of Concord too.) Add to that the economic and cultural changes in Fulton Market, which have further diluted the Mid's ability to attract a crowd—nearby boutique bars and hotels throw free events with DJs, for instance, and House of Vans hosts free shows with national rap stars.

King and Karounos were already part of Chicago's music and nightlife scene before the Mid opened—King cofounded React Presents, and in addition to Concord they're part owners of Prysm. Their press release suggests they'll keep opening venues, and given their track record, I don't doubt it. The question seems to be less "if" than "where." Here's their official statement:

Unfortunately, the time has come where the MID's doors will be closing on February 5, 2019. These last remaining months will be a celebration of the past and a toast to the future. We want to thank all the fans, artists, employees, agents, managers, and promoters who have supported us throughout this era. As a token of our appreciation, we are putting together some very special events leading up to that "One Last Song." It's been an incredible run to say the least but now it's time to turn the page as we raise our glasses to what will be the end of an era, and the beginning of our next chapter.
