  • Todd Stroger is running against Toni Preckwinkle for Cook County Board president

Former Cook County Board president Todd Stroger is running against current county board president Toni Preckwinkle in the March Democratic primary. Stroger, who lost in the 2010 primary, announced his reelection bid Monday morning, citing Preckwinkle's "dishonest" record on taxes. "People can see that she wasn't that honest when she was running against me about the sales tax," Stroger told the Tribune. "And I think she was very political on that. It sounded good to jump on the bandwagon and say we don't need this. But in essence, it was exactly what we needed." Former alderman Bob Fioretti announced his candidacy for Cook County Board president last week. [Tribune]

  • Chicago's homicide count surpasses 600 for the second year in a row

Chicago has surpassed 600 homicides in a year for only the third time in 14 years, according to the Tribune. There had been at least 609 homicides as of Monday morning, which is significantly less than the 711 homicides that had occurred at this point in 2016 but much higher than the 443 homicides that occurred in 2015 as of November 22. (The Chicago Police Department's count of 595 homicides in 2017 excludes "homicides on expressways, fatal shootings by police officers, and homicides considered justified," hence the discrepancy between it and the Tribune's total. Black Lives Matter has installed a food box where people can donate or take home nonperishable food in Bronzeville, inspired by the free boxes where people can leave or take a book. The organization wants neighbors to help each other fight hunger. "We're looking at police who kill and murder and terrorize our communities, but we're also looking at why our communities are impoverished," Black Lives Matter Chicago cofounder Aislinn Pulley said. "One small aspect of that is food insecurity." It's just the first box of many that BLM hopes to install on the south and west sides. [WBEZ]
