  • Kanye West returns to Chicago, makes first live appearance in nearly a year

Kanye West made his first live appearance in nearly a year at the Aragon Ballroom Saturday night. Fellow rapper Kid Cudi brought West out onstage during his concert and the duo performed Father Stretch My Hands, Pt 1, from West's critically acclaimed 2016 album The Life of Pablo.   • Chicago Police Department discredit rumors of increased terrorism risk

The Chicago Police Department discredited social media rumors of a heightened terror threat against Chicago over the weekend. "Earlier this evening we became aware of messages being shared on social media and by text speculating about a rumored terrorist threat," the director of the city's Office of Emergency Management and Communications, Alicia Tate-Nadeau, said in a statement Friday night. "I have personally spoken with our federal law enforcement partners tonight and there remain no credible threats to Chicago or to any event in our city." [Sun-Times]


  • One person killed in shooting at Uptown Starbucks

One person was killed and two people were injured, including a 12-year-old boy, in a shooting at a Starbucks at 4753 N. Broadway Thursday evening. The shooting was not random, and a possible drug transaction may have been the cause, according to Chicago Police Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. [ABC News]

  • Joe Ricketts suddenly shuts down DNAinfo Chicago, Chicagoist

Billionaire TD Ameritrade founder Joe Ricketts unexpectedly shut down all DNAinfo and Gothamist news sites, including DNAinfo Chicago and Chicagoist, Thursday afternoon. The New York newsroom had voted to unionize, which apparently prompted Ricketts to close the sites. "DNAinfo is, at the end of the day, a business, and businesses need to be economically successful if they are to endure," he wrote in a statement posted to all the "hyperlocal" news sites Thursday. "And while we made important progress toward building DNAinfo into a successful business, in the end, that progress hasn't been sufficient to support the tremendous effort and expense needed to produce the type of journalism on which the company was founded."   • Wall Street debt-rating agencies upgrade Emanuel's borrowing plan

Two Wall Street debt-rating agencies have upgraded Mayor Rahm Emanuel's borrowing plan to AAA status, "which city officials heralded as a sign that the city indeed could save the tens of millions of dollars that the mayor is counting on to balance next year's budget," according to the Tribune. Fitch Ratings upgraded the city's rating by ten notches to AAA, and Kroll Bond Rating Agency moved it up by one notch to AAA. The city didn't rate as highly with Standard & Poor's Global Ratings, which moved it up to a AA rating. [Tribune]

  • Sexual harassment claims against Writers Theatre artistic director prompt investigation

The critically acclaimed Writers Theatre in Glencoe is investigating sexual harassment claims about its artistic director and cofounder, Michael Halberstam, according to the Tribune. The theater's board of directors has hired "an experienced human resources consultant," and Halberstam is cooperating fully with the investigation into claims he sexually harassed Tom Robson, a former assistant director and dramaturge, during a 2003 production.
