Missed out on Pitchfork, or just want something to take your mind off of the Republican National Convention? There's plenty to do this week in Chicago, and here are our top recommendations:


Mon 7/18:
For all those who've wanted to finish a 5K with craft brews and juicy burgers, the Burgers and Beer 5K has you covered. The event starts and finishes at Soldier Field (1410 S. Museum Campus), and will provide vegetarian options as well. 7 PM

Mon 7/18: Salonathon, a variety show dedicated to "underground, emerging, and genre-defying art," celebrates five years tonight at Beauty Bar (1444 W. Chicago). 8 PM

Tue 7/19:
Curator Michael Darling leads a tour of "Witness," an exhibition that explores the photographer's role as an observer, at the Museum of Contemporary Art (220 E. Chicago). Noon

Tue 7/19:
Old-time rockers Heart, Joan Jett, and Cheap Trick return to Chicago for a night of screeching guitars and quick-belted lyrics at the FirstMerit Bank Pavilion (1300 S. Linn White). 6:30 PM

Wed 7/20: To celebrate the Whistler's (2421 N. Milwaukee) exhibit of items from the U.S. Pizza Museum's permanent collection, the Chicago bar/gallery/label is hosting an opening party. 6 PM

Wed 7/20: Pilsen's Thalia Hall (1227 W. 18th) hosts this pop-up Summer Night Market, featuring local foods, chill beers and cocktails, and a live DJ. 6-11 PM

Thu 7/21:
Poets John Koethe and David Trinidad will read from their latest collections of poetry, The Swimmer and Notes on a Past Life, at the Seminary Co-op Bookstore (5751 S. Woodlawn). 6 PM

Thu 7/21: Adler Planetarium's (1300 S. Lake Shore) monthly 21+ evening, Adler After Dark: Jumpin' Jupiter features a night of Jupiter-related entertainment, celebrating the recent arrival of the Juno spacecraft to our solar system's largest planet. 6:30-11 PM
