Welcome to the Reader's morning briefing for Friday, March 4, 2016. Have a great weekend!

  • Weather: Cold again, but above freezing

It will be cloudy and cold Friday, with a high of 37 and a low of 32. No snow is expected Friday or over the weekend, when it will warm up a bit. [AccuWeather]

  • Donald Trump struggles with Chicago political donors

Although the Trump Tower and its gigantic "Trump" sign loom large over downtown Chicago, the GOP presidential front-runner isn't raising anywhere near as much money in the city as his Republican or Democratic opponents. Only six donors with downtown zip codes donated to the Trump campaign, for an embarrassing total of $1,600, less than any other presidential contender in the race, including ex-candidates like Carly Fiorina. • The strange fatal shooting in a Fulton River District high-rise gym

Darrin Joss, 45, was shot and killed as he worked out on an elliptical machine in his high-rise building's gym Wednesday evening. The suspect, who turned himself in, was in a wheelchair, and also lived in the building, at 555 W. Kinzie. [Tribune]

  • Chicago State University suffering badly in state budget impasse

Chicago State University and its students, employees, and faculty have become pawns in the ongoing Illinois budget battle. As the war in Springfield continues, the university has already canceled spring break and might have to close entirely before the end of the semester. Notices of possible layoffs have been sent to employees, including tenured faculty. [Chicago Reader]

  • Federal government investigating University of Chicago again over sexual violence issues

Sexual assault on college campuses has been getting increased attention over the past few years, and the University of Chicago is no exception. (The Reader detailed attempts by university students and administration to address the issue back in September.) Now the Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights is investigating claims from student Veronica Portillo Heap that the U. of C. has failed to educate students effectively about sexual violence. It's the third time the DOE has investigated the university over sexual assault in the past three years. [DNAinfo Chicago]

  • Target has been "localizing" merchandise for its Chicago stores

Target has been using its downtown Chicago stores to test "localized" merchandise. For example, you're much likely to find more local craft beers and Jay's potato chips at the Streeterville Target than you would at a Target in a different city. [Tribune]
