Chicago Dancing Festival opened with a snapped suspender and a nightmare

The Chicago Dancing Festival got under way Tuesday night at the Harris Theater with a program of five works by four companies.

Highlights included one scene-stealing costume malfunction and a creepily compelling fairy tale.

Stars of American Ballet, an organization that takes dancers from various companies on tour to places that don’t often see professional ballet, brought an all-male contingent to the festival to perform two of the opening evening’s works: Justin Peck’s Distractions and Servy Gallardo’s Tango.

It was early in the second of these—a brief solo showcase of virtuoso moves by New York City Ballet principal dancer (and SAB founder) Daniel Ulbricht—that the garment malfunction occurred. A suspender strap popped loose from its anchor and proceeded to join in the dance, sailing into the air and following its wearer’s every spin, like a good partner.

Writers milk the Derrick Rose suit for all it's worth

  • No, Robert Silverman, Derrick Rose isn't the NBA's Bill Cosby.

You pundits who want to suck their thumbs and say something deep about Derrick Rose—have at it. The bar's been set so low that unless you attack your keyboard with a backhoe nothing you have to say can go lower.

The Daily Beast headline: "Is Derrick Rose the NBA's Bill Cosby?" A lawsuit filed Wednesday by a woman Rose knows accuses him and two friends of drugging and assaulting her two years ago in Beverly Hills. Rose denies it.

The Daily Beast's Robert Silverman doesn't have many facts to go on, but he understands that he's paid to moralize and facts are his enemy. Could Silverman have written, "Oh no. Please God, don’t let this be real" if he had any idea if it was or not? If he knew the facts, could he have dashed off this dazzling display of Solomonic agnosticism:

Is Angelo's Wine Bar a Cinderella story or pig in lipstick?

A curious margherita pizza - MIKE SULA

  • A curious margherita pizza

It's rarely a good sign when a takeout/delivery joint offers everything from crab legs to linguini with clam sauce, plus grilled cheese, Italian beef, fried chicken, barbecued ribs, and pizza. But for decades that's exactly what Angelo's did from a dreary storefront in Albany Park. The harsh lighting did little to sell the cardboard slices moldering on display in the front window, but the place had its devotees. Then earlier this year things suddenly went dark and Angelo's Wine Bar rose up behind the papered windows. Now it's got a spiffy dinning room with reclaimed-wood walls interrupted by a solid line of flatscreens playing classic Italian cinema, a glassed-in wine cave, and an honest-to-god sommelier roaming around. It joins Breakroom Brewery and Ixcateco Grill in the upscaling trend taking over this once working-class neighborhood full of taquerias and South American chicken joints.

Taking the David Foster Wallace magical mystery tour

The David Foster Wallace Industrial Complex that's sprung up in the seven years since his suicide has birthed an unlikely new film out this month. Called The End of the Tour, it's based on writer David Lipsky's memoir Although of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself. It stars Jason Segel as the late author and Jesse Eisenberg as Lipsky, who was sent by Rolling Stone to profile Wallace in 1996 as the late novelist promoted Infinite Jest. Part bromantic road movie and part heady Dinner With Andre-style talkathon, The End of the Tour has earned stellar reviews (including from our own J.R. Jones) and some hand-wringing because its subject had such a tortuous relationship with fame. Surely Wallace would have cringe at the idea of Wallace the movie character, right? "I don't want to turn this into a romantic, lurid, tormented-artist thing," he tells Lipsky at one point during their five-day trip.

Zombi lives! The space-rock synth duo release 'Mission Creep,' ready earth for release of Shape Shift

It's been four years since the psych-laced spaceship-rock duo of Steve Moore and Anthony Paterra put out a full-length Zombi record. But devotees to the band's canon—which features synth symphonies fueled by crisp but hypnotic drumming—will be wholly satisfied by the pair of tracks that Zombi's released in advance of the upcoming arrival of their next LP, Shape Shift. Today's 12 O'Clock Track, "Mission Creep"—the follow-up to "Pillars of the Dawn," which was dropped last month—is a sprinting dirge, in that you feel like you're running in a hamster wheel toward an unattainable Dune-like mirage. Tied tight by a looping and eternally zapping synth line, the track also includes the flittering drumming of Paterra as he shoots around his set in a calculated but frenetic way while Moore cuts through it all with a hot bass line. Look for the album, which will be released on Relapse on October 16; and look for Zombi at the Empty Bottle on November 5 when they headline a show with Pinkish Black.

Chicago Singles Club continues to unite the city's vast music community

A couple years ago Vaya front man Jeff Kelley and baritone guitarist Kevin Claxton were talking about the unrecognized players and pockets of Chicago's ever-changing, nebulous music scene when they came up with an idea. "We were trying to think about, 'How could we—and I know this is a huge buzzword, but, like, curate bands for people to listen to where they wouldn't know what they're gonna get, but they will know it's gonna be rad,'" Kelley says. That conversation helped start Chicago Singles Club, a site designed to champion local musicians through an in-depth documentation—part of which includes newly recorded singles, which the CSC team handle in-house. CSC officially debuted in April 2013 with a profile of pop songwriter and singer KSRA, and the site's been steadily expanding with one feature on a new act each month. The site passes a new milestone Friday night at the Whistler with the listening party for Volume 2: 2014-2015, a compilation of recordings from its second year; ShowYouSuck, Me Jane, Glass Lux, Moritat, Radar Eyes, Meat Wave, and Absolutely Not are among the acts who've contributed tracks to the compilation.
