Tiki drink classes, a sustainable seafood dinner, and more food stuff to do and read

On to other events, plus cool things to read or listen to in the world of food . . .

• Evanston's long-running seafood-focused French restaurant Oceanique will be featured in the next Key Ingredient challenge, but if you can't wait that long to check out a place that's been there for 26 years for crying out loud, they're having a sustainable seafood dinner with the Shedd Aquarium's Right Bite program tonight. It's at 6:30 and it's $85 for the four course meal with wine pairings; call 847-864-3435.

• I'll be emceeing the chef demos at the Good Food Festival on Saturday and you should be there too. But if you're not, you should be at Culinary Historians of Chicago as they welcome Kari Underly, one of the top butchers in America, who'll be talking about the meat industry today, women in the meat industry, Chicago's history in the meat industry, and more. The next day they'll have a program on making matzoh. I expect artisanal matzoh any day now.

• The decidedly eccentric supper club Eating Vincent Price, inspired by Price's 1960s cookbook, will have a pop-up dinner on Thursday, with a four-course meal by chef Aram Reed and cocktails by mixologist Lauren Parton; go here for more details.

• That's What Cheese Said! No, that's not a new product from the makers of I Can't Believe It's Not Butter!, but rather an evening of chef-made grilled cheeses and drinks by guest bartender Charles Joly at CH Distillery on March 31.

• Want to sample a bunch of Jared Rouben's exotic Moody Tongue beers? There's no better chance to try them than an April Fool's Day collaborative dinner with SideDoor, the gastropub on the side of the grand old Lawry's Prime Rib mansion. The six-course meal with five different beer pairings (one turns up twice) is $75; call 312-787-6768.

Five things to read or listen to this week . . . the first three sort of meta-food pieces, in that they're kind of about media as much as food themselves:

• Sarah Freeman at Zagat this week had a great example of what food media should be doing lots more of: a piece on the "secret weapons" in celebrated Chicago kitchens, that is, the people whose unglamorous work keeps restaurants going but who don't normally get publicity. Surprise (not really): they're almost all Mexican!

• This is a little confusing if you don't know the players: it's a piece about a beer blogger, Michael Kiser of Good Beer Hunting, but it's on the blog of a brewery (Solemn Oath Brewery in Naperville). So it's a brewery writing about a blogger, as opposed to the other way around. Anyway it's an interesting piece about being a beer blogger (and Good Beer Hunting has become widely respected on the beer media scene), and as much as it's about beer, it's also an interesting look at the media side of things too: how to promote your voice and still get paying gigs for your writing and photography, how to have something the mainstream media call "objectivity" while being a consultant for breweries, and so on.

• The hosts of Car Con Carne visit Hecky's in Evanston with Kimmi of the heavy metal podcast The Metal Deli and wind up talking about the new female-focused format on one Chicago station, the absurdly overpriced Grateful Dead tickets, and more.

• Why does your drink cost what it does? A very frank piece about beer, wine, and cocktail math at Crain's.

• And there's an in-depth interview with Iliana Regan of Elizabeth, at a site called the Midwestern Diner.
