Would MLK approve of closing libraries in his honor?

The Chicago Public Library wants you to know that it will not be open on January 19.

In honor of Martin Luther King's birthday, no books or other library resources will be available for the thousands of kids who'll be out of school that day.

Never mind what Dr. King might have thought of that.

The last time I asked why CPL was closing—on another winter day when there was no school—I was told that it was a holiday for city employees, end of story.

Martin Luther King Day is a federal holiday, so it's also being observed in places like Evanston and Oak Park. (King's actual birthday is January 15, but the holiday is always the third Monday of the month.) Evanston and Oak Park libraries, however, will be open. They'll even be hosting some special MLK programs.

That sounds like a better tribute than locking up, but here's the news CPL wants us to pass on:

All locations of the Chicago Public Library, including the Harold Washington Library Center, Woodson Regional and Sulzer Regional Libraries, will be closed on Monday, January 19, 2015 in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Birthday.
