The Chicago History Museum's Costume Council is commemorating its 40th anniversary by presenting "Chicago Styled—Fashioning the Magnificent Mile," an exhibit curated by Petra Slinkard with the support of local fashion legend and Costume Council president Nena Ivon. There is plenty to celebrate: thanks to the Council's efforts, the Chicago History Museum now has the second largest costume collection in the world.

The history of the Council—created in 1974—parallels the expansion of North Michigan Avenue, which boomed in the 70s after the construction of the Hancock building and the Water Tower Place, attracting high-end brands such as André Courrèges and Halston. Most of the garments featured in "Chicago Styled" date from the 70s and 80s, an era of unabashed glamour. At the costume ball that celebrated the exhibit's opening, guests' sartorial choices were similarly glamourous; you can see a couple illustrated here by Josh Crow. During the Chicago Styled social media day the crowd was still chic but a bit more low key. The event included a tour guided by Petra Slinkard and a talk led by local fashion designer Azeeza Khan, who shared her experience of owning a store located on the Mag Mile. She mentioned how versatile Michigan Avenue is, and that's exactly what I love about it: I get inspired by a Neiman Marcus window, then go shop at H&M. Speaking of inspiration, teen designers are being invited to create garments based on the exhibit in the FashionNext challenge presented by the Museum.
