Lollapalooza 2014: Repeats, surprises, and, yes, OutKast

Early this morning the folks behind Lollapalooza announced the lineup for the annual three-day festival, its tenth in Grant Park; as Gossip Wolf long suspected, OutKast are headlining. The reunited Atlanta hip-hop duo join the four headliners Greg Kot leaked last week—Eminem, Kings of Leon, Skrillex, and Arctic Monkeys, spicing up a bland list of acts that have played Lolla in the not-too-recent past. The sixth headliner, Scottish electronic producer Calvin Harris, also played Lollapalooza in 2012. The big acts closing out each night are supposed to increase enthusiasm for the event, but it's hard to get excited about seeing Eminem play Lolla on Friday night when I can remember that just a few years ago he headlined on a Saturday—Lollapalooza's big enough that it should be able to offer up more of a variety of top-tier performers. Hey, at least there's OutKast!

The rest of the bill is spotty in places (I'm not sure why Broken Bells are so high on the lineup), and has a number of acts I'd never expect Lolla to book, including Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan. His appearance on the bill suggests Lolla is making a more concerted effort to showcase hip-hop, and with acts such as Nas, Run the Jewels, and Ratking slated to perform, the rap offering looks fairly decent—here's hoping Lolla puts Chance the Rapper on a bigger stage than the tiny thing he performed on last year. The festival could still improve its gender balance for bookings, though some of the most interesting names on the bill are female, including Courtney Barnett, Jhene Aiko, and Lorde. The New Zealand pop star is also one of four performers Gossip Wolf correctly predicted would play Lolla—in addition to the aforementioned OutKast the wolf also named Skrillex and Chicago rapper Vic Mensa, who returns to the Grant Park fest as a solo act after performing as part of Kids These Days in 2011. The local offerings are mostly strong, though per usual there are few of them: in addition to Vic and Chance (who recently moved to LA) the Chicago groups include Flosstradamus, Krewella, and Into It. Over It. Check out the full lineup after the jump, which includes links to previous Reader features, interviews, videos, and more. Lollapalooza kicks off Friday, August 1.
