Celebrity veterinarian Kevin Fitzgerald—you might have seen him on Animal Planet—was on hand Wednesday when "Animal Connections," a Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibit, opened its Chicago run with a stop on the lawn of the Museum Campus.

Dr. Fitzgerald was explaining a wall of images of stuff he's extracted from the bellies of his patients, mostly with the help of an endoscope.

There was the dog who ate a chess piece, the turtle who swallowed a fishhook, the lizard who binged on chunks of concrete, the parrot who unfastened the screws of his cage and then feasted on them, and the snake who thought he'd found a real egg when he consumed a decorative egg-shaped stone.

A few, like the Christmas tree ornament, required surgery.

"Animal Connections" celebrates the 150th anniversary of the American Veterinary Medical Association and features some cool interactive exhibits that let aspiring vets play diagnostician.

There's also a display of vintage veterinary equipment, like an arm sleeve, that might give them second thoughts.

The whole thing's mounted on an 18-wheeler that'll visit neighborhood parks from July 27 through August 9. (Fitzgerald—who'll soon be in Mongolia, equipping vultures with radio transmitters—was only here for opening day.) It's free; more information here.

And here's the schedule (unless otherwise noted, the visits take place from 10 AM to 4 PM):

July 27-28: Welles Park, 2333 W. Sunnyside

July 30: Humboldt Park Boathouse, 1359 N. Sacramento

July 31: Humboldt Park Day Camp and Summer Dance 2-8 PM

August 2: Douglas Park, 1401 S. Sacramento

August 3: Amundsen Park, 6200 Bloomingdale

August 5-6: Cornell Square, 1809 W. 50th

August 8: Jackson Park, 6401 S. Stony Island

August 9: Ridge Park, 9625 S. Longwood
