Redmoon announced today that it has hired former Steppenwolf artistic producer Rebecca Rugg as producer of the Great Chicago Fire Festival, a citywide summer and fall event slated to launch next year.

Rugg, who recently departed Steppenwolf, worked on programming for its Garage theater. A former About Face artistic associate who got her start as a dramaturg at New York's Joseph Papp Public Theater, she has also taught at the Yale School of Drama. This won't be her first massive project: she handled the university network for the 365 Festival, in which hundreds of theater companies all over the country each mounted a portion of 365 Days/365 Plays, the year-long play cycle by Suzan-Lori Parks.

And Redmoon's concept for its neighborhood-built Fire Festival floats (which will be torched as the climax to a river parade) could be evolving. Redmoon artistic director Jim Lasko's initial idea was that the float art should represent the single thing each neighborhood most wants to get rid of.

Here's the current description: "open access art, celebrating Chicago's spirit of resilience."

Not sure what that means, but it might not be guns, gangs, and drugs.
