An Oversimplification of Her Beauty
  • An Oversimplification of Her Beauty
This week we present our gigantic Best of Chicago issue, which delivers such necessary tips as Best New Underground Venue, Best Free VHS Collection, and Best Avant-Garde/Experimental Film Series Located in a Mexican Restaurant. We also recommend Mike Leigh's Life Is Sweet (1990), just reissued on DVD and the subject of this week's long review; Terence Nance's An Oversimplification of Her Beauty, a feverishly creative romantic fantasy; and Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's This Is the End, which chronicles the end of the world as hip movie stars know it.

Check out the issue for new capsules of: Augustine, a French drama about an epileptic girl being treated by a progressive neurologist; The Bling Ring, Sofia Coppola's fact-based satire about SoCal brats burglarizing celebrity homes; Far Out Isn't Far Enough, a documentary profile of the brilliant illustrator Tomi Ungerer; Heat Lightning, a 1935 Warner Bros. relic about women running a gas station in the Mojave desert; Perfect Days, a Czech comedy about a woman looking for Mr. Right; and Signal, another Czech import in which cell-phone company representatives drive around collecting bribes for service.

Repo Man
  • Repo Man
Best bets for repertory: Lloyd Bacon and Busby Berkeley's 42nd Street (1933), Wednesday at Northbrook Public Library; Alex Cox's Repo Man (1984), Saturday and Monday at Gene Siskel Film Center; John Carpenter's They Live (1988), Saturday and Wednesday at Film Center; and Folktales and Folk Music, an outdoor screening of vintage music-related shorts, Friday at Black Cinema House.

As you can tell from this abbreviated list, Doc Films is on break. Go outside and play!
