Roscoe Mitchell
In this week's paper I previewed the Friday concert by the brilliant reedist Roscoe Mitchell at Constellation, but on Thursday night he'll be sharing his thoughts as part of a free panel at the Chicago Cultural Center. Presented in conjunction with Prairie, the ongoing sound installation there by artist Shawn Decker, the discussion—titled "Surround Sound: Prairie and Beyond"—will be moderated by Museum of Contemporary art curator Dieter Roelstraete, and will also include reedist and composer Ken Vandermark and Pamela Jennings, director of the School of the Art Institute's Shapiro Center for Research and Collaboration. According to the press materials, "the participants will discuss their views on concepts such as organizing sound, planning dynamic spaces and innovative environments, as well as improvisation and self-organizing systems." The discussion takes place in the Claudia Cassidy Theater from 6 to 8 PM.

Also on Thursday is the Chicago debut of the great Indian vocalist and sarangi player Lakha Khan, who plays a concert presented by Kalapriya Center for Indian Performing Arts at Curtiss Hall, on the tenth floor of the Fine Arts Building at 7:30 PM. Although Khan was schooled in Indian classical music, he's also mastered Rajasthani folk and Sufi traditions and belongs to the Manganiyars, a community of Muslim court musicians whose own traditions have been dying out. Madison-based DJ and producer Ankur Malhotra, who's been trying to preserve these sounds with his Amarass label, recently issued At Home, a superb set of field recordings featuring the voice and Sindhi sarangi of Khan, with dholak accompaniment by his sons Dane and Pappu Khan. Below you can check out a video of one of the album tracks, "Bhanwarji Kalhali."
