A couple of months ago I became obsessed with a song called "Goodies" by a New York rapper named Cakes da Killa, an engagingly loud and twitchy dance-rap song with one of those kind of beats that's almost enjoyably obnoxious. That beat was made by a Bronx resident named JX Cannon, who I immediately started following on SoundCloud.

I recently checked in on Cannon's page to see what he had been up to and discovered that he recently uploaded a five song EP called, fittingly, JX EP. Most of the tracks feature an odd mixture of manic, Baltimore-club-style rhythms and breezy, quasi-ambient sounds. It's not a combination that looks very synergistic on paper, but when you hear it it makes its own weird kind of sense, just like Cannon's side-by-side shout-outs, in the EP's description, to Cuban vocal group Los Zaifros and the surreal cult anime series FLCL.

Hit the jump to sample "Bukkake Rainbow," whose energetic but exceedingly chill vibes don't quite fit with its title, which sounds like something by a third-rate sludge-rock band. If you're a rapper and you're feeling it, go ahead and jump on it—Cannon says his beats are free to whoever wants them.
