All this month we'll be reviewing the Oscar nominees for the best animated, live-action, and documentary short films, alternating daily between categories. Check back tomorrow for the next installment.

I'll be surprised if Fresh Guacamole wins the Academy Award for Best Animated Short. Less than two minutes long (setting the record for the shortest film ever nominated for an Oscar) and basically the illustration of a single idea, it feels like the least ambitious of the five nominees. Yet it displays considerable imagination in its short running time, and it makes you hungry for more work by its talented director, Adam Pesapane, better known as PES.

PES's low-fi, stop-motion shorts specialize in visual puns, using familiar items to stand in for similar-looking objects or even people. Guacamole shows PES making the title dish with grenades in place of avocados, baseballs in place of onions, and so on. It isn't as clever as its predecessor, Western Spaghetti (2008), nor as laugh-out-loud funny as the director's 2001 breakthrough Roof Sex, in which two armchairs appear to be getting it on. But this is only a minor complaint; PES has developed a cartoon style all his own, and his visual humor is always a treat. You can watch it below.
