12 O'Clock Track: Miss Tony, "Pull Ya Gunz Out"

I recently caught up on The Corner, the 2000 HBO miniseries that precedes "the greatest show on TV," The Wire. The folks who worked on those programs had a remarkable eye for detail—which is part of what makes The Corner and The Wire so great—right down to the music that fills Baltimore's streets and dilapidated row houses.

Today's 12 O'Clock Track is one song that pops up a couple times in The Corner's six-episode run: "Pull Ya Gunz Out" by deceased drag queen, radio personality, and Baltimore club legend Tony Boston, aka Miss Tony.

A classic example of the raw and uncomplicated local spin on club music, "Pull Ya Gunz Out" is rugged, repetitive, and infectious. Miss Tony spends a large portion of the track shouting out different locales across the country and instructing folks to, well, "pull ya gunz out"; Tony's delivery is reminiscent of the call-and-response vocals that are an integral part of go-go, a regional offshoot of funk localized to the D.C. metro area. Check out the YouTube stream of "Pull Ya Gunz Out" below, though chances are you'll enjoy it a whole lot more blasting it at a New Year's Eve party than listening to it off of a pair of computer speakers.
