It seems like every band that comes up these days in town is a "supergroup" of some sort, comprised of notable dudes from well-established bands. Tomorrow night at the Subterranean, a record-release party is shaking down for one of these all-star bands. It's called Treasure Fleet and it's comprised of members of some of Chicago's best-known punk acts: the Arrivals, Smoking Popes, and Lawrence Arms. These guys laid the groundwork for Chicago punk rock through the late 90s and early aughts, and this newer act strips away the breakneck gruffness of their better-known acts, making way for layered, poppy rock.

Treasure Fleet's new release, Future Ways, its second for Recess Records, is a far cry from what you would expect from the band's members, which is part of what makes it so interesting. The beer-soaked, working-class blitz is gone. Instead we have an upbeat stomp, rich with hooky vocal harmonies and catchy organ parts blended with dreamy bridges and off-kilter guitar leads. Maybe this is the fabled sound of punks growing up? These guys' more high-profile projects were immensely important listening during my formative years, so it's fun and refreshing to hear what's happening with them now, and I can't wait to find out what's next.

The record's title track should do a good job of summing up what the band is all about:

Also on tomorrow night's bill are the Brokedowns, Audacity, and Big Eyes. Should be a rager.
