So let's go with photos. If a picture is worth 1,000 words, then here's 6,000 words' worth. (Photos and art direction by Alison Green.)
Ware's work ran in the Reader from 2002 to 2006. In our 40th-anniversary issue, he reflected on his "most nerve-racking Reader cartoon."
And here's a great interview with Ware on the Publishers Weekly website: "A Life in A Box: Invention, Clarity and Meaning in Chris Ware’s 'Building Stories'"
It begins:
Publishers Weekly: What would you say to a reader who isn't familiar with your comics about this new work?
Chris Ware: First of all I would probably apologize because I feel compelled to do that for everything I do.
Ware will be at Quimby's on Sunday, October 14. The only thing that could make this more gorgeous is his signature on it. No apologies necessary.
