In the current music-biz climate, artists are expected to be not only brilliant musicians but also brilliant marketers, brilliant social networkers, and (at times) brilliant beggars. In a B Side feature this week (expanded from a Bleader post) Kevin Warwick takes a long look at Kickstarter, the crowdfunding service that allows (or requires, depending on your view) artists to be all those things in one space—specifically, he dissects the reasons behind the fabulous success of the campaign run by Indiana band Murder by Death. Gossip Wolf's also got Kickstarter on the brain in the form of a fund-raiser from local popsters My My My, as well as tour news from Pelican and Nachtmystium and what's up with We Repel Each Other. This week's Three Beats hooks us up with info on a show by photographer Storm Thorgerson, one of the best album-art designers of all time; the return of the Dusty Groove sidewalk sale; and a nonprofit using hip-hop to battle youth violence (an especially apt subject in the wake of the Lil JoJo murder). The latest Secret History of Chicago Music profiles twin sisters and avant-jazz singers Alyce and Rhae Andrece. And on Soundboard we have live-music suggestions including Amon Tobin, Ghostface Killah, Turbo Fruits, California Wives, and Peter Brotzmann & Jason Adasiewicz.
