White Sox: Beat the best

Paul Konerko gave the White Sox a lead they never gave up Saturday.
It was distressing last weekend when the White Sox were swept in Detroit to fall out of first place in the American League Central behind the Tigers.

Since then, however, the Sox have revived, and to the mantra that they should just beat teams in their own division they've come back with the response, "Why not just beat the best?"

Suddenly the Sox own the Texas Rangers, the back-to-back reigning American League pennant winners.

The Sox swept the Rangers at home at the beginning of the month, and they go for another sweep in Texas Sunday, having won the first two games of the series. They've now beaten the Rangers five straight times, longest since a six-game win streak against Texas in 1991.

Paul Konerko gave starter Phil Humber and the bullpen a lead they'd never relinquish Saturday with a home run in the fourth with Adam Dunn aboard, and Dunn punctuated a three-run inning fifth with a homer of his own—his 31st of the season.

The 5-2 victory moved the Sox two and a half games in front of the Tigers.

Looks as if I'll have to reassess my prediction that the team that won last weekend between the Tigers and Sox would win the division. But one bet I won't have to reassess is the one in which I said Dunn would hit more homers than Detroit's Prince Fielder. Dunn now leads, 31-16.
