It's been a while since I've heard much from White Magic, the odd New York psych-pop outfit led by singer and pianist Mira Billotte. (She drummed and sang in her first band, Quix*o*tic, which was based in D.C.) In fact, the group's last significant release was the 2007 EP Dark Stars (Drag City), and since then Billotte has moved to Los Angeles. She's rolling into Chicago for a rare local performance at Burlington Bar on Saturday night, where she'll play solo and preview new material she's recording for the next White Magic record. Since most of the band's output so far leans heavily on Billotte's piano playing, I don't imagine the show will sound somehow lacking because she's going it alone.

Last year White Magic put out a single on its own Mysteries label, which you can stream on this here website. Interestingly, Billotte doesn't play piano on either song—a rugged original called "White Widow," which rocks considerably harder than usual for White Magic, and a cover of the Jefferson Airplane staple "White Rabbit."

Opening on Saturday night are Magic Key and Joshua Abrams's Natural Information Society.
