I'd like to give a major-league shout-out to Donna Vickroy, a columnist for the Southtown Star.

I don't know Donna—never met her. But she wrote a story that's as good a feature as I've read in years.

It's about Frank Barbaric (pictured left), a retired podiatrist and World War II vet, who lives in Mount Greenwood on the southwest side.

I know I'm a sucker for tales of WWII, but this one's almost too real to believe.

Barbaric tells it to Vickroy while they're sitting in the kitchen of the home he shares with his son, Frank. He talks about how he was a kid from around 63rd and Ashland who wound up among the first wave of soldiers shipped into Anzio after the Allies invaded Italy.

And he meets these soldiers, also from the the southwest side, and one thing leads to another and—oh, here, just read it yourself.

It's got a couple of fantastical twists and turns right out of Stephen King or The Twilight Zone.

Well done, Donna Vickroy. And to Frank Barbaric and all the WWII vets—I can't thank you enough.
