A bad day for the Heat haters

LeBron James and Dwyane Wade won an NBA title; big whoop
It's a bad day to be a hater, but, really, when is it ever a good day for that?

LeBron James won his first NBA championship Thursday. And I suppose it would take a bitter churl to point out that the team called for more fouls lost every game in this series.

Somehow, the Oklahoma City Thunder committed fewer fouls in only the first game. After that, the tide turned.

LeBron might have earned series MVP honors, but the Sixth Man Award for the finals goes to the NBA refs.

I suppose it would also be churlish to suggest that a healthy Bulls team would have beaten either of these teams.

But that's the way it's going to be here.

The Bulls, as it turned out, had what is likely to be their best chance at an NBA championship in a season abbreviated by the owners' lockout. They had most of their players back, they had an edge on almost everyone else in team chemistry—and as a result they won more games than any other team in the league.

Yet last season's MVP Derrick Rose blew out his knee in the very first playoff game, Joakim Noah badly twisted his ankle two games later, and the Bulls were one and done.

Leaving the door open for the Miami Heat.

All right, LeBron really put his team on his shoulders and carried them past the Boston Celtics after going down 3-2 in the Eastern Conference finals. And there's no denying he's a very good player.

Yet, thanks to the Fates, the Heat never did play the best team in the regular season in the playoffs. Not even the likely second-best team, the San Antonio Spurs.

And somehow, right now, it's all too apropos to say, "Wait till next year," with Rose out at least until 2013. Next season as a whole is already all but lost.

That's how it feels to be a hater.
