Columbia College announced yesterday that president Warrick L. Carter, recently captured on video telling a student to "shut up," will retire in August 2013, a year earlier than previously planned.

Columbia board chair Allen Turner said a nationwide presidential search is under way. To "ensure a smooth transition," however, Warren Chapman, longtime Columbia trustee and current vice chancellor for external affairs at UIC, will join Columbia June 1 as senior vice president.

Carter came to Columbia in 2000 and oversaw a doubling of the school's South Loop real estate, now totaling 2.5 million square feet. Enrollment rose 25 percent during his sometimes controversial tenure, to a high of 12,500, but has dropped recently, inspiring cost cutting and a difficult college-wide "prioritization" process.
