When the White Sox designated misser was last seen in the Cell last season, he was striking out. Faced with the possibility of not breaking the club's single-season K record, Dunn rose to the occasion, fanning a remarkable nine times in 11 at bats in his last four games. This gave him 177 Ks on the year, breaking the old record of 175.
But ‘‘what happened last year is last year,’’ Dunn told Daryl Van Schouwen of the Sun-Times. Van Schouwen himself added, "The batting eye that was lost last year is back."
On MLB.com, reporter Scott Merkin observed that Dunn was now "looking more like the prodigious slugger" of his National League years than the whiffer he was last season. "Don't pay attention to Dunn's .222 average through the season's first five games," Merkin wrote, "because the difference is absolutely noticeable to everyone around him."
There were also 6 Ks in those first five games to overlook.
The skies are bright for the Sox right now: they just won the home opener over the Tigers, 5-2, their third straight win, improving their record to 4-2.
And how did the Big Breeze fare? He struck out swinging in the first. He struck out swinging in the fourth. He took a third strike in the sixth. And he struck out swinging in the eighth.
