In recent years Chicago has established itself as one of the most important cities in the world of heavy metal—it's only midwestern modesty that keeps me from flat-out saying it's number one—and the seemingly endless procession of bands coloring outside the genre's often strict stylistic lines is making a considerable impact on musicians around the globe. Longstanding metal label Relapse Records has been scooping up many of the better acts around town, including Bloodiest, Indian, and the best-named band in metal, Weekend Nachos.

This afternoon Relapse announced that it had signed experimental metal trio Locrian, whose membership is split between Chicago and Baltimore. I consider it a smart move on the label's part. Over seven years and 20 releases the band has refined a sound that combines metal's aggression with the concern for texture and a not-disagreeable intellectualism picked up from the more serious corners of the experimental-music scene. (They recently released a split with fellow Relapse signees Horseback, who were themselves recently the subject of a 12 O'Clock Track post on the Bleader.)

Relapse will begin by reissuing Locrian's newest vinyl-only album, The Clearing, as an expanded two-disc set entitled The Clearing/The Final Epoch. The band has plans to go into Electrical Audio with Greg Norman to record material for a new release.
